Friday 7th May - Daisy Banks Dark Sky Observing

A last chance before the nights get too short, to visit Daisy Banks and bag some of those spring galaxies!

We'll be there (weather permitting) between 7 and 7:30 to take a look at the sun, and then Venus as it sets. Makes a nice photo opportunity with the sunset!

There'll be a couple of the society scopes there and you are very welcome to bring your own of course. If you want to call Darren or Linton to check before setting out, please do so. Directions to Daisy Banks can be found here

P.S. There is good pub just down the road for that all important post-observing refreshment!! Look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteers Needed!!

Again, a gentle nudge for volunteers for the June/August Meetings to do short presentations. It doesn't need to be more than 20mins or so and could be:

Our Chairman, Darren, will take the August spot with an update on his own observatory, and a demonstration of the EQ6 mount control software EQMOD, that is becoming popular

Please do get in touch if you think you can help!!

Wednesday 28th - Members Evening

UPDATE!!

Unfortunately, Greg is unable to make our meeting on Wednesday, due to ill health. Instead, we shall be showing an episode from Prof brian Cox's excellent "Wonders of the Solar System" series - featuring Saturn, with a Sky Diary, and providing we have the forecasted clear sky, we will open the dome for some observing of Saturn. We will still be in S7 for the meeting.

Greg passes on his sincere apologies and will visit us at a later date in the year. On behalf of everyone at BAS, we wish you a speedy recovery, Greg

We are lucky enough to have Greg Smye-Rumsby (he of Astronomy Now graphics) with us for April's talk - to be held in S7 in the school science block - direction can be found here

May's talk is from Dr Johanna Jarvis (Peter Ashwell's daughter) on the topic of the sun - very apt given the recent spell of good weather!

June, July and August are traditionally 'quiet' months with people off on holidays, but we still need speakers for the monthly meetings! If you are able to give a short talk, we would be delighted and can assist with all the technology! We just need you and a topic!!

Website Updates

Some new pictures added to the Gallery:

Apologies to Dave and Barry for taking so long to get these listed!

Observing

Regular Wednesday Observing has now come to end for Summer, however, please keep your eyes on the newsletter and web site for any special events that may occur

AGM 24th February 2010

The minutes of the 2009 AGM, and the agenda for the coming one can be found in the members area of the website. If you need a reminder of the password, please contact one of the Committee

Also, as a reminder, we hope to have John Thatcher with us for an update on the James Webb Space Telescope!

Mars Observing / Imaging

As you all know, Mars is currently well placed for observing and imaging, although having just passed opposition it will now start to recede. Remember that observing is every clear Wednesday, and while Mars is viewable, we shall make the most of it! Dave Eagle, Linton, Phil and myself were lucky enough to try and get some imaging on Friday 29th Jan - Dave's image is below (click to see the full size) - and we were trying out some colour processing techniques whereby the Green is synthesised from the Red and Blue channels. After the initial processing results, we all wondered how the likes of Damien Peach and Pete Lawrence manage to produce their amazing results!!

Astronomy Course

Bedford School is starting a series of Astronomy Courses, aimed at newcomers to the hobby. Full details on the course can be found at Bedford School Astronomy Course so if you know of anyone who may be interested - family, friends, work colleagues - do let them know.

January Members Evening - Nick Howes, 80mm of Sky

We had an excellent talk from Nick on imaging the night sky with modest sized telescopes, and how we can ease ourselves into this fascinating aspect of astronomy without breaking the bank! Of course, the talk has plenty of the sort of pictures to make the audience go "Ooooo" at just the right places, but Nick also gave an appraisal of the various items of equipment needed - mounts, filters and so on.

Nick kindly left us a copy of his presentation, so I will pick out some choice images and post them up, along with some of the slides on equipment considerations

As many of you know, Nick reviews the latest astronomical equipment for Astronomy Now, and with a busy job and family, we are grateful to him for taking the time to pay us a visit - thanks again Nick!

Images Updates

Some new images have been uploaded to the Gallery - notably some excellent submissions from Dave Eagle, and an effort at M1 from our Chairman!

Dave says he has finally cracked guided imaging - and judging by the final result, I would agree!

Dave Eagle - M42 Guided

He has also produced one of the best images of Clavius I have seen in a long time - a truly wonderful image, superbly processed to give an excellent noise free image! He says "Over 1.1gb of AVI went into this image and I have to say, I am pleased at the outcome". So you should be Dave!

Clavius Crater - Dave Eagle

Finally, our Chairman Darren, has submitted a Narrowband image of M1, the Crab Nebula. He says "Trying to get the colour data is proving quite frustrating, but I'll keep at it!!"

AGM Feb 24th 2010

Yes, it's that time of year again! The minutes of the 2009 AGM will shortly be available in the members area, and there will be an email of the access details coming round very shortly. For those of you that receive your newsletter by post, there will be a note in there too.

After the AGM, we are pleased to report that John Thatcher will be on hand to give us an update on the JWST project! Poor John seems to travel the world at a moments notice so we are very grateful for the time to come and see us again.

Welcome to 2010!

Well, weather has certainly not been conducive to astronomy over the last couple of weeks, and I sincerely hope everyone is coping with the weather.

Needless to say, observing will be suspended until it is a little safer to travel on roads and walk on pavements, so please check here, or contact one of the committee members before setting to the observatory

Our New Year talks programme starts again with Nick Howes on 24th Jan - we hope to see as many of you there as possible. Nick's talk will be on 80mm of Sky, which could mean all manner of things! Nick's talk on Solar astronomy was very popular last year, so I am really looking forward to this

Stay safe during the cold snap, and pray for some clear skies!!

Merry Christmas!

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone associated with BAS a very Merry Christmas! Speakers, Visitors, Members and Committee all play an important role in a successful Society such as ours, and I thank everyone for their support this year. We've had great success with some of our IYA events this year - and we shall be submitting a full account of those to the IYA organisers - and we hope to do more along the same lines next year

Please take extra care in the cold and snow, and let's hope we get some clear skies over the holidays to test out those Christmas pressies!!

Christmas Social Update

Dave Eagle will show the latest images he has been working on, and Annabelle Walker will be doing one of her legendary entertainment shows! We look forward to seeing you all on the 16th

More December events

Stockwood Discovery Centre (Luton) are holding a Space Age Exhibition, on until 8th Feb 2010. Andy Green and his StarDome planetarium will be there until this Sunday (6th Dec) and then the last 3 days of December. More information can be found at Stockwood Discovery Centre. Of course, if anybody from the society does make it to the event, please submit a report!

Also, we are hopeful that John Thatcher will be on hand at the February AGM for an update on the James Webb Space Telescope program. John has tried several times to get to see us but his hectic work schedule means he is often pulled away at the last minute. John says "I'll be home from travels the day before the AGM, so it's unlikely I'll be again on that day..... but you never know!"!! We very much look forward to seeing John again

Gallery Update

Some more pictures have been added into the Gallery.

December Events and Activities

December is a busy month for BAS, plenty of activities going on - many of which really do rely on support from as many members as possible. So, here is a run down of the events and dates:

More details on the Exhibition, and campaign to return Admiral Smyth's telescope to Bedford can be found at the Exhibition page

2010

The new year then kicks off with January's members evening receiving a talk from Nick Howes on "80mm of sky". February is the AGM of BAS and we will shortly issue the password for access to the Members Area where the minutes from the previous will be posted.

As always, if you are interested in becoming part of the Committee, either as an officer or as an Ordinary Member, please contact one of the Committee. We would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in joining.
